Sometimes Saying Nothing Leads to Something

I once watched an old woman walking down the street so slowly that it seemed that she was barely moving. People going about their day, and  it seemed that time seemed to slow down, almost stop around her.

Since 2014, the “Vigil for Peace”—or, as it’s commonly known, the “Monday Demo”—has taken place every Monday in Halle (Saale). A diverse group of Querdenker, conspiracy theorists, far-right extremists, and neo-Nazis marches through the city and gathers at the market square.

I circle the edge of the square very slowly until I find myself in the middle of the demonstration, among the people. The proximity between people who do not understand one another and do not want to understand one another. Confusion, irritation, insults, demands to speak.
